AMC: workflow execution times out
workflowExecutionTimeoutSeconds limits the run time; the minimum is 900 seconds and the default maximum 86,400 seconds.
Symptom
The execution stops because it takes longer than the permitted value.
Cause
According to the API reference, workflowExecutionTimeoutSeconds is the time a workflow is allowed to execute in the compute engine. If it exceeds that, the execution times out. The value must be at least 900 seconds (15 minutes); unless configured otherwise the maximum is 86,400 seconds (24 hours).
Fix
- Keep the parameter set when starting the execution, or raise it within 900 to 86,400 seconds.
- Shrink the query time window or reduce the data with filters on non-sensitive columns.
- Split large queries into several executions with shorter windows.
Practical tip (our own take): Running several windows back to back can trigger the overlapping-execution block. See the "too many workflows" page.
The cause follows the Amazon documentation. Some of the fix steps are our own judgement and do not replace asking Amazon support.
